چکیده

Using a new physical model for star formation (Padoan 1995) we have tested the possibility that globular clusters (GCs) are formed from primordial mass fluctuations, whose mass scale (10 10 M⊙) is selected out of a CDM spectrum by the mechanism of non-equilibrium formation of H2. We show that such clouds are able to convert about 0.003 of their total mass into a bound system (GC) and about 0.02 into halo stars. The metal enriched gas is dispersed away from the GC by supernova explosions and forms the galactic disk. These mass ratios between GCs, halo and disk depend on the predicted IMF which is a consequence of the universal statistics of fluid turbulence. They also depend on the ratio of baryonic over non-baryonic mass ,Xb, and are comparable with the values observed in typical spiral galaxies for Xb ≈ 0.1− 0.2. The computed mass and radius for a GC ( 5× 10 M⊙ and 30 pc) are in good agreement with the average values in the Galaxy. The model predicts an exponential cut off in the stellar IMF below 0.1 M⊙ in GCs and 0.6 M⊙ in the halo. The quite massive star formation in primordial clouds leads to a large number of supernovae and to a high blue luminosity during the first two Gyr of the life of every galaxy.

Primordial Star Formation under Far-Ultraviolet Radiation

Thermal and chemical evolution of primordial gas clouds irradiated with farultraviolet (FUV; hν < 13.6 eV) radiation is investigated. In clouds irradiated by intense FUV radiation, sufficient hydrogen molecules to be important for cooling are never formed. However, even without molecular hydrogen, if the clouds are massive enough, they start collapsing via atomic hydrogen line cooling. Such clo...

Thermal and Dynamical Evolution of Primordial Gas Clouds On the Formation of First Luminous Objects

We investigate the thermal and dynamical evolution of primordial gas clouds in the universe after decoupling. Comparing the time-scale of dynamical evolution with that of fragmentation, we can estimate the typical fragmentation scale. We propose the following scenario of the formation process of first luminous objects consisting of large number stars. First, by pancake collapse of the overdensi...

Photodissociative Regulation of Star Formation in Metal-Free Pregalactic Clouds

We study the H2 photodissociation regions around OB stars in primordial gas clouds whose virial temperatures are between a few hundred and a few thousand Kelvin. In such small objects, a single O star can photodissociate a mass equal to that of the cloud itself. As a result, the clouds deplete their molecular coolant and cannot cool in a free-fall time, and subsequent star formation is totally ...

The Formation and Fragmentation of Primordial Molecular Clouds

Many questions in physical cosmology regarding the thermal history of the intergalactic medium, chemical enrichment, reionization, etc. are thought to be intimately related to the nature and evolution of pregalactic structure. In particular the efficiency of primordial star formation and the primordial IMF are of special interest. We present results from high resolution three–dimensional adapti...

Simulations of Early Structure Formation: Primordial Gas Clouds

We use cosmological simulations to study the origin of primordial star-forming clouds in a CDM universe, by following the formation of dark matter halos and the cooling of gas within them. To model the physics of chemically pristine gas, we employ a nonequilibrium treatment of the chemistry of nine species (e , H, H+, He, He+, He++, H2, H þ 2 , H ) and include cooling by molecular hydrogen. By ...
